The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has been developed to improve choice and create better outcomes for people with a disability. NDIS funds any goal that you set for yourself (those that NDIS considers reasonable and necessary) and you are free to choose any NDIS service provider you want.
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a national insurance scheme and a way of supporting people who are living with a permanent disability. The NDIS has changed the way that disability services are delivered. With NDIS, you are able to choose your services and how you want them delivered. It provides funding directly to individuals.
There are around 4.3 million Australians who have a disability. Within the next five years, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will provide support an estimated 500,000 Australians who have permanent and significant disability. For many people, it will be the first time they receive the disability support they need. The NDIS can provide all people with disability with information and connections to services in their communities such as doctors, sporting clubs, support groups, libraries and schools, as well as information about what support is provided by each state and territory government.
The NDIS aims to provide every Australian citizen with disabilities with information and support services to be able to live to the fullest. While looking to avail of the benefits of NDIS, you must check your eligibility criteria and have properly prepared a care and support plan that lists your immediate and future needs that the NDIS can fund. Here are a few points to check if you fall under the eligibility criteria of the NDIS:
Visit the Am I Eligible page on the NDIS site.
To support children with developmental delay or disability in the age group of 0-6 years, the NDIS adopts its Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) approach. This approach recognises the special needs of children and that the support they require will be different from what adults with disability would. The NDIS also supports children who are 7-18 years old with a diagnosed disability.
NDIS funds the support for children with developmental delays or disability for the following outcomes:
To access the NDIS, your child must meet the following eligibility criteria:
The NDIS plan will determine the type of supports you can receive. This will depend on the age-group of your child, namely, 0-6 years or 7-18 years, and their present status of availing disability support under the NDIS.
The NDIS provides ongoing funding for all ‘reasonable and necessary’ disability equipment, care and support services. Generally, the supports and services provided to you assist you to achieve your goals and live as independently as possible. Services also include community participation and assistance with gainful employment.
NDIS has got different types of plans – core supports, capacity building, and capital supports.
Under these plans, NDIS will provide support to you.
NDIS can fund your personal care plans, nursing support, travel assistance services, accommodation, respite and more services.
Core Supports help you with everyday activities, your current disability-related needs and to work towards your goals. Your Core Supports budget is the most flexible, and in most cases, you can use your funding across any of the following four support categories. However, there are instances where you do not have flexibility in your funding, particularly for transport funding
Capacity Building Supports help build your independence and skills to help you pursue your goals. Unlike your Core Supports budget, your Capacity Building Supports budget cannot be moved from one support category to another. Funding can only be used to purchase approved individual supports that fall within that Capacity Building category
Capital Supports include higher-cost pieces of assistive technology, equipment and home or vehicle modifications, and funding for one-off purchases you may need (including Specialist Disability Accommodation). It is important to remember that funds within the Capital Supports budget can only be used for their specific purpose and cannot be used to pay for anything else. The Capital Supports budget has two support categories: Assistive Technology and Home Modifications.
With the NDIS, you will work out what reasonable and necessary supports you need to live your life and achieve
your goals. You’ll then receive funding to pay for these supports.
The types of supports that the NDIS may fund for participants include:
The NDIS does not provide funding for support if it is:

Plan Managed
You may choose to pay someone to help manage your NDIS funds and pay invoices. The NDIS will add extra funds into your NDIS Plan to cover the cost of a Plan Manager. If you choose this option, then you are a ‘Plan Managed NDIS Participant’.
Self-managed
Self-managed is when you manage your NDIS funds yourself (including with help from your family / carers). You, or your family, will purchase services and supports, manage your NDIS budget, claim and pay for supports and keep
invoices and receipts. If you choose this option, you are a ‘Self-Managed NDIS Participant’
If you appoint a plan manager they will look after the financial and administrative elements of the plan for you. The NDIA will pay your plan manager who will then pay your providers for you. You can choose to have NDIA manage your plan or you can choose to manage your Plan yourself. Talk to your planner at your planning meeting about what will be best for you.
If you are not able to use public transport because of your disability, you may be able to get NDIS funding to cover transport such as taxis.
If you previously received funding through a taxi subsidy scheme, the NDIA will also take this into account.
The NDIS will not provide funding to carers or family members to transport a person with a disability to everyday commitments.
The NDIS can also fund supports that help you build confidence and learn how to travel or use public transport independently.
For example, if your goal is to get your driver’s licence, the NDIS may be able to support you to achieve this.
Yes! You can invite family members to be a part of your planning process and really every step of the way.
You might like your family members included a lot, or a little – the choice is yours.
There are 3 different ways you can manage your NDIS plan.
You don’t have to choose only one of these options. You can use a combination.
For example, you might self-manage some parts of your plan while the NDIA may look after other parts.
The three options are:
